VANCOUVER, B.C. — Ducks winger Joffrey Lupul will undergo surgery on his troublesome back on Thursday and will be out of the lineup six-to-eight weeks, Coach Randy Carlyle confirmed today following the morning skate at General Motors Place.
Lupul will have the procedure done by Dr. Robert Watkins at Marina del Rey Hospital. The surgery is to repair a herniated disc in his back, which has affected him all season.
If the surgery is successful, Lupul could possibly return before the two-week Olympic break in mid-February based on the timetable given.
Lupul missed seven games from Nov. 21-Dec. 3 because of back spasms. Two cortisone shots helped alleviate the pain to where the winger got back in the lineup and gave the Ducks an immediate lift as he scored four goals in three games.
But Lupul clearly had a setback as he reported numbness in his leg and stayed out of the lineup the last two games. Carlyle said today that Lupul visited Watkins twice and decided on surgery as the course of treatment that was recommend.
Lupul has 10 goals and four assists in 23 games after being reacquired by the Ducks in June from Philadelphia in the trade that sent Chris Pronger to the Flyers.
