The Boston Herald’s Sean McAdam says Penny — a two-time All-Star with the Dodgers — will likely fill the No. 4 spot in Boston’s rotation.
Penny, 30, can also earn up to million in performance bonuses.
He was only 6-9 with a 6.27 ERA in 2008 while battling shoulder problems, prompting the Dodgers to exercise a million buyout instead of picking up his option for 2009 at .25 million.
Boston also signed former San Diego Padres catcher Josh Bard. McAdam writes that the Red Sox have all but given up on re-signing catcher and captain Jason Varitek.
Bard, 30, got a one-year, nonguaranteed deal worth .6 million. He briefly played for the Red Sox in 2006, but was had trouble catching knuckleballer Tim Wakefield and was traded to San Diego for Doug Mirabelli. With Kevin Cash now a Yankee, the Red Sox still need someone to catch or chase those knuckleballs.
