Goalie guessing game begins

Jean-Sebastien Giguere was 2-1 with a 3.20 goals-against average and .895 save percentage in the preseason.

Jonas Hiller was 1-1 with  2.35 GAA and .926 save percentage.

So Hiller will start on Saturday against San Jose?

Coach Randy Carlyle delivered his familar refrain Friday: “Come to warm-ups.”

And so the goalie guessing game begins with the Ducks, who are falling on their mantra of having 1A and 1B options in net without ever revealing who is A and B.

Hiller and Giguere usually don’t know if they are starting until the night before the game, so this routine is old hat.

“We’re kind of used to it,” Hiller said. “I don’t think it will change a lot.”

Hiller shut out San Jose twice in the Western Conference quarterfinals. He said he didn’t catch all of the Sharks’ season-opening 5-2 loss Thursday but he knows what to expect.

“There’s always a big rivalry with San Jose,” he said. “They’re going to be extra motivated.”

Giguere and Hiller also expect some carry over from last season into Saturday. The Ducks became the fifth team to upset the NHL’s top regular season team (by points) since the expansion season of 1967-68.

“In the past, when we played teams that eliminated us, we were always ready for them,” Giguere said.

“We’ve got to be disciplined against them. If we play our game and dictate the pace, we’ll be fine.”
