Ducks-Flames, the morning after

Jean-Sebastien Giguere looked almost playoff-worthy in this 3-2 shootout victory over Calgary, stopping Curtis Glencross late and going 3-for-3 in the shootout itself.

A Ducks’ goaltender was the No. 1 star of the game. Has that happened this year?

But Giguere wasn’t just positioning himself and letting pucks hit him. He came out high to challenge Calgary shooters and used his blocker in those situations.

“Pete’s told me I need to do that more often,” Giguere said.

Pete is Pete Peeters, former goalie for Philadelphia, Boston and Edmonton. He’s the goaltending coach now that Francois Allaire is in Toronto.

Of course, Giguere and Jonas Hiller are longtime students of Allaire’s.

“No one can build you a better foundation than Frankie,”  Giguere said. “Pete is just trying to add a few things here and there.  What he’s really doing is tweaking what we do. And he’s out there on the ice working with us in practice, taking shots.  He played goalie in this league and he went through every emotion we’re likely to have.”

Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Bobby Ryan faced a tough challenge from Calgary’s front line of Jarome Iginla, Olli Jokinen and Jamie Lundmark and defensemen Robyn Regehr and Dion Phaneuf, both Canadian Olympic Team candidates.

But the big line got both Anaheim goals in regulaton, the first one set up by Ryan locking horns with Regehr and keeping the puck alive behind the net, just in time for Lundmark to give it away to Perry.

– Almost missed the implications of Brendan Shanahan retiring. It meant, among other things, that Teemu Selanne is the league’s leading active scorer right now.

– At the morning skate, a Calgary TV reporter approached Randy Carlyle, who asked how he was doing.

“Just trying to keep my job,” the guy said.

“Ditto,” Carlyle said.

– So the Ducks have won two of three on the homestand and lost the other by a goal to San Jose. Here’s a test of their focus: They have Carolina straggling into Honda Center Wednesday night. A victory there gets the mind right for those rollicking young Chicago Blackhawks, who play the Ducks Friday afternoon.
