The Ducks had a two-hour long practice Monday, the last 10 minutes without pucks.
It was a reminder that this is still training camp.
The Ducks are down to 31 players with the assignment of left wing Matt McCue to Manitoba of the American Hockey League. Defenseman Steve McCarthy was placed on waivers.
The Ducks must be down to 23 players by their season opener Oct.3.
Coach Randy Carlyle assessed the team Monday after its fifth preseason game. He said the group is turning the puck over too much and trying to do too many things.
“There are certain situations that present itself as, you should move the puck versus skating the puck, and we’re making some bad decisions,” Carlyle said.
Some of that can be attributed to the number of new players who are learning their system.
It’s also a refresher course for the returners, as the Ducks will spend some considerable time on special teams and defensive coverages.
Said Carlyle, “This time now is a lot of review for the guys that are here.”
