This September, the Anaheim Convention Center will host what organizers are calling the largest Disney event ever staged — the D23 Expo.
“Every part of Disney is going to be there,” said Steven Clark, Disney communications VP and head of the official D23 Disney fan club instituted this year. “It’s sort of unprecedented. It is the largest gathering of all things disney, ever.”
For $37 each day, fans and members of the public can have access to exclusive screenings of ABC shows, behind the scenes specials about upcoming Disney films, robotics exhibits, Imagineer panels and keynote addresses by top executives, like CEO Bob Iger, Pixar chief John Lasseter and Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo.
The head of ABC, Steve McPherson will speak, as well as Dick Cook, the Disney Studios Chief.
Disney will also preview upcoming films like Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” “Tron,” “Prince of Persia,” “A Christmas Carol,” and several others — the whole third floor of the convention center will be converted into a 40,000 square-foot 3-D movie theater, along with galleries displaying concept art and artifacts involved in the creation of the movies previewed.
(The average large supermarket is about 40,000 square feet.)
There will also be dozens of panels and seminars with Disney artists and imagineers — much of the conference is modeled after the big San Diego comic/sci-fi fan convention ComicCon that draws thousands each year.
In fact, D23 is exhibiting at ComiCon as well, showing memorabilia from the production of Disney sci-fi and fantasy films like “The Black Hole,” “The Rocketeer,” “Tron,” Condorman,” and “Sky High.”
The D23 Expo runs from Sept. 10 through Sept. 13. D23 members can get a 20 percent discount on tickets and can get in an hour early. The floor hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and events like movie screenings can run until midnight. All the access is included in admission, Clark said.
