'Wizards of Waverly Place' session
No. 5 Disney story: D23
In March, the Walt Disney Co. formed its first-ever official fan club, called D23, responding to ardent fan’s requests to have a direct affiliation with the company.
Six months later, the club hosted the D23 Expo, billed as the ultimate fan experience at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Over four September days, Disney trotted out just about every aspect of its business — from movie previews and toys to T.V. screenings and panel discussions. The first 30 minutes of “The Princess and the Frog” and sneak peeks of Disney movies were shown. Celebrity surprises included Disney Channel star Miley Cyrus and actor Johnny Depp, who dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies. “Wizards of Waverly Place” cast held a special session.
What’s next: D23 promised to have another expo at some point at the Anaheim Convention Center. As of mid December, D23 had yet to finalize a future date, likely beyond 2010, said Elaine Cali, a spokeswoman for the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau.
