By next summer, Knott’s Berry Farm will have a new ride … a ride that’s new to Knott’s, at least.
Early next year, the Demon Drop is scheduled to make its way to Southern California from Knott’s sister park Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. The ride was installed there in 1983. Both Cedar Point and Knott’s are owned by the Ohio-based Cedar Fair Entertainment Co.

A Knott’s press release about the ride says more than 19 million riders have taken the six-second trip up the nearly 10-story tower, only to drop that same distance in nearly two seconds at 55 mph.
The Demon Drop will take the place of the Screamin’ Swing located in the Charlston Circle section of Knott’s Berry Farm. No date for that ride’s removal has yet been set, Knott’s spokeswoman Meghan Gardner said.
So why is the ride heading west? The Web site themeparkinsider.com says Cedar Fair put the ride up for sale in 2005, and a comment on a more recent post suggests this is the result of Cedar Point’s inability to sell it. Knott’s officials said they had no information about that.
Cedar Point’s own Web site shows ridership on the Demon Drop has declined from 770,298 in 1996 (the oldest figure made available) to 472,937 in 2008.
In a release, Knott’s General Manager Marty Keithley called the Demon Drop a “classic thrill ride,” adding, “I think guests will find it a great addition.”
Installation for the Demon Drop is scheduled to begin in early January, with the ride opening in time for Memorial Day weekend, Gardner said.
