Expect crowds at Disney parks for New Years Eve

New Years Eve 2000

New Years Eve crowds are expected to swarm the Disneyland Resort, a popular destination with special fireworks, dinners and parties for the holiday.

The place is expected to be so packed that two separate fireworks shows are planned for around midnight so visitors can disperse into two parks.

Plus, Downtown Disney will charge $20 for parking — usually free for three hours. Visitors can be reimbursed if they have receipts from the movies, a concert or sit-down dinner, said Michele Himmelberg, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman.

Both parks will be open late — 2 a.m. at Disneyland and 1 a.m. at Disney’s California Adventure.

No special admission tickets are required: Adult visitors can pay the regular $72 fee or use annual passes, if they don’t have blackout dates.

Here are some of the events planned for New Years Eve:

Fireworks: Both Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure will have special fireworks shows. For the first time, Disney’s California Adventure will shoot off fireworks at Sunshine Plaza at 11:55 p.m. In previous years, there were New Years fireworks near Paradise Bay, Himmelberg said.

At Disneyland, the “Fantasy in the Sky” fireworks show is set for midnight.

Countdown: The California Adventure fireworks will mark the countdown to midnight. Guests can also hear the countdown at Hollywood Boulevard and Pacific Wharf.

At Disneyland, Sleeping Beauty Castle will be “countdown central,” according to a Disney brochure. A DJ will play music and Mickey and Minnie Mouse will be on hand for updates. Countdowns also will be at Tomorrowland Terrace, Rivers of America and near “it’s a small world” ride, according to MousePlanet.com.

Starting about 7 p.m., hats and horns can be picked up at the festival arena in Frontierland at Disneyland and at Condor Flats and in front of the Paradise Pier gate, according to MousePlanet.com.

Parties: Three radio stations are having dance parties starting and live broadcasts from Disney’s California Adventure. The stations have been giving away tickets.

  • Power 106, Hollywood Backlot Stage, 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.
  • Super Estrella, Pacific Wharf, 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.
  • 104.3 MYfm, Sunshine Plaza, 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Disneyland dance parties throughout the night are at:

  • Rivers of America
  • Small world promenade
  • Tomorrowland Terrace
  • Plaza Gardens Stage

Dinners: Several Disneyland Resort restaurants are offering special New Years Eve menus. For example, Napa Rose has an $85 four-course meal or a late seating package with champagne and dancing for $200. On the less expensive end, Plaza Inn at Disneyland has a New York strip loin, mashed potatoes and green beans dinner for $21.99 for adults and $9.99 for children.
