Disney extends free tickets for stranded tourists

The Disneyland Resort has extended its offer of free theme-park tickets to travelers who are stranded in the area because of canceled flights related to the erupting Iceland volcano.

Visitors now can get free passes through Friday, said Betsy Sanchez, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman. Originally, the offer was supposed to end today.

Late Wednesday, Sanchez was checking how many tourists have taken advantage of the free pass offer.

As of late Tuesday, less than 20 people had sought free tickets to the two parks — Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure. Disney also quietly gave discounts to tourists who needed to extend their hotel stays.

Torrance resident Noble Smith said he plans to take his cousin, Kevin Delpiano, and his cousin’s girlfriend to Disneyland on Thursday. Delpiano and his girlfriend have been unable to get flights back to France where they live.

After a 10-day trip, the couple took a plane to Houston, where they were scheduled to catch a connecting flight to Paris on Saturday. But the flight was canceled, so they flew back to Los Angeles to stay with relatives. The couple now is set to  leave on Sunday, Smith said. Delpiano, 18, a college student, has been getting assignments on e-mail from a professor.

Smith said he was glad that Disney extended the deal so they can go to the park for free.

“I didn’t know if the deal would still be good,” Smith said.

To get tickets, visitors can go to the booths in the esplanade by the Disney parks or call Disneyland Resort customer relations at 714-781-7290.
