16 million gallons begin flowing into Disney’s California Adventure lagoon

Water cascaded today out of a large pipe into Paradise Bay at Disney’s California Adventure, refilling the 16-million-gallon lagoon.

Disney symbolically began the process of refilling the lagoon with the help of Mickey Mouse and Goofy pouring buckets of water into the lagoon and turning on the spigot on Thursday.

The lagoon was drained nearly a year ago so Disney Imagineers could install the new “World of Color” water-and-light show that will debut in late spring.

The water flowing into the lagoon, at 2,800 gallons per minute, was recycled by Disney through the Orange County Water District using its Groundwater Replenishment System.

The same system will be used when the resort drains Disneyland’s 6-million-gallon Rivers of America for refurbishment early next year.

After the lagoon is full, it will be continuously filtered by the park’s system.

Disney officials said that filling the lagoon will take place in installments as they go through a test-and-adjustment period. Filling will continue a few feet at a time depending on how things go during this process, until the lagoon is full; that could take until the end of the year or possibly later.

After the lagoon is full, the Imagineers will begin programming the fountains, lights and projectors to prepare the show for its premiere at the park next year.
