It really doesn’t make any sense, because Anaheim isn’t even Los Angeles County, it’s in Orange County.
i have lived in L.A. all my life and i am kind of upset about this.

Why are the Anaheim Angels now called the Los Angeles Angels?

YES!
Not only that, they don’t put the word “Los Angeles” on their uniforms. So what I’d love is for someone to explain to me how in the world they make more money by having that ridiculous name? I’ve spent much time in baseball forums asking the exact same question. I was met with a lot of vile hatred and disgusting comments, yet no one was ever actually able to explain how putting “Los Angeles” in their name makes them more money.
And of course, all of us in LA think it’s the biggest joke in the world. No one in LA considers them LA and everyone in Anaheim still thinks of them as the Anaheim Angels. Moreno is a moron.
Tell that to the owner, Artie Moreno. He and the city of Anaheim went to court over this (last year or even the year before) and Artie came out the winner. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim sounds pretty bizarre. I think it was to try and pull in all the mexican fans that the Dodgers have. I don’t think it has really worked for him though….
Because when the new owner (whose name currently escapes me) bought the club, he did so knowing full well that the Dodgers were the prominent team in Los Angeles. He decided to call his team the “Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim” mostly as a notice to the Dodgers that their reign as the #1 team in the city was no longer going to go unchallenged. The name change is a marketing ploy to try to get a few Dodgers fans to switch their allegiance. Based on the performances of the two clubs, the ploy certianly has a better than even chance of succeeding.
By the way, the new owner of the Angels made a lot of friends when he declared concession prices at major league venues to be “outrageous.” He lowered the cost of concessions at the Angels’ park by more than 50%.
They are actually called the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim… They say to be part of both communities. That people from both cities will feel like they are a part of the team. However, I think they got a financial compensation from Los Angeles County in order to make that happen
its marketing LA is the biggest city around there and he wanted more fans from LA
Los Angeles is a huge city, while not that many people have heard of Anaheim. However, they had to keep the word “Anaheim” in the name because of a contract with Disneyland. Disneyland wanted people to hear of Anaheim, and come to their park. The Angels wanted a big city name, but had to keep Anaheim in their name.
Anaheim, I guess, can be seen as part of the “greater Los Angeles area.” It’s really reaching.
Well, way back when the name “Anaheim” didn’t register in people’s minds, the team called themselves the Los Angeles Angels originally, but then they became the California Angels. But then they decided it was time for a name change again, so they picked Anaheim Angels. But apparently that wasn’t enough, so they decided to market themselves to the LA area and call themselves the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
By the time you finish saying the name, the game’s over.
Why do the Jets and Giants call themselves the “New York” Jets and Giants? Neither plays in New York City. Neither plays in the STATE of New York!
I say that if those teams think the “greener pastures” of New Jersey are better, the name “East Rutherford Jets/Giants of New Jersey” sounds good to me.
Same goes for the Angels. Pick a name.
I think the best mockery of this was the minor-league name change of the Long Beach Armada last year – the “Long Beach Armada of Los Angeles of California of the United States of North America Including Barrow, Alaska”:

Awesome.
The angels have not changed their name or lacation, but they keep changing how they want to be called. Off hand I know of at least four-
California Angel
Los Angeles Angels
Anaheim Angels
And now the ludicrous Los Angeles Angel of Anaheim.
I thought that it was silly from the start to name the team angels anyway
No good reason think they make more money because of it but they don’t every one still thinks of them as the Anaheim Angels
You seem pretty upset about this…
You seem pretty upset about this…
You seem pretty darn upset about this…
Because they needed a REAL identity and people east of Anaheim have know idea where it is. Los Angeles on the other hand is known the entire world wide. Arte Moreno made a $Billion selling billboards, so I’d say he knows what he’s doing! No brainer! Los Angeles Angels!
Because of Owner Arthur Moreno calling the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim how messed up is that, when it was owned by Gene Autry they we’re called the California Angels, and when Disney owned them they we’re the Anaheim Angels , now under Moreno they are the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, its all about ownership.
Money. Pure and simple.
It’s competition with the Dodgers, the Angels want more fans so since they’re a better team then the Dodgers team they figure that Dodger fans will switch allegiances to the Angels. Actually they’re called the L.A Angels of Anaheim.
It is a marketing thing, it relates them more to the greater Los Angeles area, it gets them more sponsorship outside of Anaheim.
Because their owner Arte Moreno wanted to tap into Los Angeles media…Whats the big deal alot of teams aren’t based in the city they acutally represent like the Giants and Jets are located in New Jersey and they represent New York, the Redskins are located in Landover,Maryland and they represent Washington,D.C.
the angels are having a mid life crisis.
The new owner wanted to make the Angels have a bigger appeal to others (mainly advertisers) across the country. LA is a bigger market, and can command a lot more $$$ from advertisers, if they associate the Angels with LA… I live in OC, but it doesn’t bother me.. People must remember….don’tcha? The LA Rams? They played in Anaheim for a loooong time without any fuss about the name. Simply put “ If there was never any Los Angels, there wouldn’t be an Anaheim today. The area grew because of the people that was attracted to LA in the first place!
** BTW, the Dallas Cowboys don’t play in Dallas. The Detroit Pistons don’t play in Detroit…and the NY Giants and Jets, don’t even play in New York state!!
it is a marketing ploy, but the angels were initially called the Los Angeles Angels when the team was franchised in 1961and they played at the Wrigley field in Los Angeles. in 1965 they changed their name to the California Angles and in 1997 to the Anaheim Angels. The name should not matter any way, all that matters is that the Angels dominate the AL West.
The only person that wants Los Angeles in the team name is owner Arty Moreno. He did it for marketing reasons because sponsors and advertisings will throw money at a team that can ride the coattails of one of the largest media markets in the work that is Los Angeles. Who would want to sponsor a team from Anaheim. After some time in court with the city of Anaheim, it was decided to name the team the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim because the Angels had a contract with the city to keep Anaheim in the name. Original, the Angeles were the Los Angeles Angels when they first came to the MLB. They later became known as the California Angels when they moved to Anaheim. Later the team name was changed to the Anaheim Angeles.
In general, the Angel fans do not like the Los Angeles tag because they want to have nothing to do with Los Angeles because most of ran south and left LA for a reason. The Los Angeles Dodgers’ fans have no interest in sharing a city name with another team, especially one from the snotty Orange County.
I have lived in LA all my adult life and I don’t know what to think of this.
“Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim”?
Silly. Absurd Envy – of a great baseball market to the north?
You know how it would be in Spanish?
Angeles de Los Angeles de Anaheim … roflmao…..
Personally, I think it’s clever marketing gone too far!.
Their actual name is the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Artie Moreno wanted to include Los Angeles to compete in that market. It is strictly for advertising, television contracts, and marketing.
Real simple answer….because of the proximity to a large market in associating the team with Los Angeles………and also since the “Anaheim-Los Angeles Angels” name logo will not fit across the front of uniform
they are actually the las angeles angels of anaheim
The two M’s. Money and Marketing.
Only to those that the owner has paid off…to us fans, we will always call them the Anaheim Angels.
I’m not an Angels fan, but I refuse to call them anything else.
Their stadium is located in Aneheim, but they are based in Los Angeles.
baseball is boring.
Its just so the name change mean different merchandise for people to pay inflated prices for. Its just a money making scheme
Simple because “Los Angeles” is a lot more recognizable than “Anaheim”.
First they had a marketing problem when they were called the California Angels because no one outside of the immediate area even knew where they were located.
Then they got another marketing problem when they became the Anaheim Angels because again not too many people outside of the immediate area even knew where Anaheim was and were not aware of it’s proximity to Los Angeles.
So some marketing people got together and decided to add “Los Angeles” to the name to make it more recognizable to people through out the country.
Although this is rather hokey I do understand this from a marketing point of view.
Think about the Texas Rangers. Very few people even know where int Texas they are located and are not even aware of the fact that they are in Arlington and that Arlington is a sub burb of Dallas and that makes them hard to market. Although in that case no one cares as they are a crappy team. lol
What an effing moron you are. Learn how to use a computer, you drug addled skank !!!!!!
Who cares about the name. All that I care about is the Angels winning. He is a marketing genius and he knows what he’s doing. He has my full support.
